This past Sunday I had the chance to go and see some pretty exciting winter offroad racing. The J Day Offroad series bills themselves as “the future of off-road racing” in part because of their spectator friendly course layout and willingness to host riders of all experience levels.
They really draw a diverse crowd in terms of age. These two young guns were having a blast laughing it up with each other before their race. From the looks of it, Dad isn’t quite so relaxed.
Once underway the youth riders looked every bit as confident on the bikes as the grownups. I can’t even imagine how good they will be five years from now. Start ‘em young!
Some of these kids were pretty young and they handled their bikes like champs. Give these young guns a few years and they’ll be stiff competition for anyone out there.
The course held up surprisingly well (from my perspective) with some mud getting turned up but otherwise it looked like it was just some snowy ruts. The riders may disagree here, but it wasn’t nearly as sloppy as I expected.
There was however this cool double jump section except it seemed too big to double up on, so instead riders sent the first jump and were rewarded with an icy cold mud puddle before the second jump. It did make for some dramatic steam coming off the hot exhaust when they crested the second jump.
This was a great event and I’m really glad I made it down there. If you rode in the race and want to see the full gallery of images or order prints, you can find them here:
